How did you guys find the story Those Who Walk Away from Omelas?
Was it good? Did you find it a little too weird for your taste? What?
Great story. But it's meant as a kind of parable -- an image in story form, with a strong message. It's a message about those of us in rich countries who maintain our wonderful lifestyle at the cost of children and the poor who live in a permanent state of suffering. It poses a challenge to us: is this the way we really want to live? Is it worth it? Or is it an obscenity? LeGuin doesn't offer easy answers to that question -- but asking the question in a serious way is a major step forward for anyone who reads the story.
